<div class='uawarticle'>Sheet metal stampings include a range of many manufacturing processes. These include punching by use of a machine press, coining, bending, embossing and blanking among others. Stamping can be a single stage process where only one stroke is required to make the desired form or it could be a number of stages. Stamping is usually performed on metals but it can also be done on other materials such as polystyrene.<br />

One method of stamping is by bending. This method is used to make channel shapes, V shapes and U shapes on metals along an axis that is straight. Brake presses, box and pan brakes as well as other machine presses are used to carry out this process. Some of the products made by this method are boxes.<br />

Another operation is blanking and piercing. These are shearing processes which need a punch and die to change webs. In piercing the piece that is punched out is scrap while in blanking the piece punched out is useful and is referred to as a blank.<br />
<br />
Coining is a precision operation of stamping. A work piece is subjected to high stress to make plastic flow on the surface. In metals plastic flow work hardens the surface and reduces the surfaces grain size. The material inside retains its ductility and toughness. Coining is used when the requirement is very fine features.<br />

Embossing is a very economic and diverse method of stamping. A malleable metal is hammered to shape. This is done from the reverse side to crease a design in low relief. Chasing is a reverse process that is used to finish up the embossing.<br />
<br />
Progressive stamping, drawing and forming are other methods that can be used in stamping. The process of stamping is calculated by simulation. Simulation technology detects splits, wrinkles and material thinning by application of non linear finite element analysis. This technology helps the industry in saving time and cost.<br />
